Ask the Experts: Youth services for all

1 min read Youth Work Youth services

Over the past year our youth services have become more focused on addressing issues such as antisocial behaviour and unemployment. How can we make sure that young people who don’t meet certain criteria are still encouraged to access activities?

It is often the case that services – rather than young people – are hardest to reach. You should team up with faith, community, sports and voluntary sector organisations to publicise activities. You could also work with them to arrange taster sessions for individuals or groups.

Engaging local schools is vital. You could take a roadshow around schools to demonstrate the services you offer and deal with any concerns that young people might have about attending. Plan a range of activities for the school holidays, not just the summer.

The journey to and from activities can sometimes be difficult, so it is important you make sure this is safe for young people. Using the internet and other media will help get information out to the young people you want to attract.
