Ask the Experts: Dealing with emotional challenges

1 min read Early Years

How can I ensure my children's centre staff can cope with the emotional challenges presented by some of our parents?

Being able to understand the raft of emotions that is elicited by either having children or working with them is very under-estimated, but critical if we are to form emotionally healthy relationships.

Some staff are not emotionally mature enough to pick up the nuances within child and parent relationships and may miss some of the clues that suggest an abusive or neglectful relationship. One tool to help mitigate the risk is regular supervision. Supervision is a reflective process that allows the staff space to raise concerns about children and families, which can be explored in private with the supervisor. Some children's centre staff have access to a consultant who provides supervision externally.
