I am working with a seven-year-old who is very overweight. His lunchbox is full of fattening foods. Other children make fun of him and he is clearly unhappy. How can I support him?
As someone who was an overweight child, I can really empathise with this boy – I have always wished that someone had intervened when I was growing bigger and unhealthier.
Encourage him to take part in health activities to help him understand how good it can feel to move his body and appreciate it working well.
The issue of teasing, which is in fact bullying, also needs addressing with the wider group. Most settings have bullying policies and effective strategies for dealing with this.
