Ask the Expert: Coping with rejection

1 min read

I applied to be a volunteer at a youth advice and counselling centre. Halfway through the training, I was told that I wasn’t suitable, leaving me devastated. How do I get over this?

I can understand your feelings. When you have offered your time and skills for free, it can be crushing to be told you aren’t suitable.

The course leaders should offer you an explanation. If they haven’t, make an appointment to discuss the situation.

The type of service you describe will need volunteers who can support young people objectively and robustly with all kinds of issues, and without those issues having a direct impact upon them personally.
