Ask the Expert: Inappropriate outfits

1 min read Youth Work
I have been helping with a youth club fashion and culture show. I was involved with the Asian girls who were wearing traditional costume. But groups from other clubs dressed like tarts, were almost naked and it was so embarrassing. Can anything be done?

This is indeed a very topical debate. There has been concern for some time about the kind of images that children and young people are routinely subjected to, and whether or not this has a detrimental effect on their behaviour.

I believe we only sexualise children when the intention is to do so. After all, it wasn't long ago that it was a common sight to see young children playing totally naked on our beaches. Yet put a bikini on a six-year-old girl to cover up her nudity and suddenly she looks like she is trying to mimic adult behaviour. It's a conundrum.

I would also take issue with your use of the word "tarts", which in itself is a value judgment based on pre-existing moral assumptions. Language like this is unhelpful when dealing with such a sensitive subject. You have a wonderful opportunity to debate the topic with the young people and possibly their parents too. That way you can help them make up their own minds and empower them to make informed decisions and choices.
