Ask the Expert: Confronting domestic violence

1 min read Youth Work
I have started volunteering at a community centre during the day for African women and children. One of the things that comes up is the fact that domestic violence is generally expected and accepted within the community. I worry for the young people and the effect it has on them. What should I do?

As I understand it, there are some cultures in which relationship issues are seen as the business of only those involved and nothing to do with outsiders. However, I find it completely unacceptable that anyone should tolerate violence of any kind as part of their culture, and in particular insofar as it affects young people.

We are all brought up in different ways, but the idea that women should "put up with being abused" is not something anyone living in the UK should tolerate. My advice would be to engage with the women in relaxed and open discussion, where you can express your views in a non-judgmental and positive way, getting the message across that they do not have to suffer in silence.

You might consider contacting www.womansaid.org.uk or www.nationaldomesticviolencehelpline.org.uk or www.refuge.org.uk. They may even be able to send someone along to talk to the group.
