Arts: Birmingham arts project to expand

1 min read

The Gallery 37 initiative, which costs Birmingham City Council up to 250,000 each year, provides accredited arts courses for 250 16- to 24-year-olds over three or four weeks.

This year's scheme begins in Birmingham tomorrow (22 June). Participants will be paid 60 and receive free travel.

Youth Music approached the city council 18 months ago to expand the scheme and, following a successful three-year lottery bid by the charity, Bristol, Leeds, London, Newark and Oldham will adopt the model.

Pat Dixon, creative learning manager at Birmingham City Council, said 85 to 95 per cent of participants in the city went on to higher or further education or employment.
