Antisocial Behaviour: Liberty promises to challenge curfews

1 min read

Cumbria Constabulary was the first police force to ban all under-16s from the streets of Wigton, Cumbria, after 9pm during the Easter school holidays (YPN, 7-13 April, p4).

Barry Hugill, a spokesman for Liberty, said: "In the view of our lawyers, the actions of Cumbria Police are in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights."

Durham Constabulary imposed a curfew on County Durham's Deneside estate last week, and police forces in Middlesbrough, Leeds and Powys are also considering curfews.

"We have information that 60 per cent of police forces will have curfews for under-16s by the summer holidays," said Hugill. "They are placing its residents under house arrest."
