ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: Graffiti crackdown focuses on retailers

The campaign was launched on 13 May by Livingstone in partnership with Comdr Steve Roberts, head of the Metropolitan Police's youth policy unit.

Retailers in 27 London boroughs are being asked to sign a voluntary code not to sell spray paints to under-18s, and pass on information if vandalism is suspected. The initiative is part of the mayor's environmental agenda, which sees graffiti as an antisocial act.

Livingstone described graffiti as the "scourge" of the city and said it cost Londoners 100m a year. "We could just continue to keep cleaning it up, but the best way forward is to concentrate on tackling this problem by root by controlling the supply," he said.
