Antisocial Behaviour: Football project is a winner in Wigan

Youth Justice Youth Work
A Friday night project in Wigan has successfully taken hundreds of young people off the streets by involving them in football.

The Game On Midnight Leagues have seen almost 200 young people participate in weekly football sessions at Robin Park Arena and Lowton High School since February.

Twelve- to 16 year-olds from across the borough have been taking part in the free scheme, which has now drawn to a close.

The leagues have been organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports Development Team and funded by a £4,200 grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Craig Anthony, events delivery officer for the sports delivery team, said: "The leagues have given teenagers something to do on a Friday night in a safe environment and away from any potential trouble."
