Anti-social behaviour: Tyne and Wear scheme a success

A scheme to combat anti-social behaviour in a Tyne and Wear shopping centre has seen a 70 per cent reduction in young people causing a nuisance since April 2005.

Run by insurer Prudential and Crime Concern, the Washington Galleriesscheme is one of 12 operating in shopping centres across England andWales.

The Prudential 4 Youth programme brings together retailers, young peopleand shopping centre staff to think up ways of stopping and preventinganti-social behaviour, shoplifting and vandalism.

Other successes include a 41 per cent reduction in anti-social behaviourin Cwmbran town centre between 2005 and 2007.

New ideas developed by young people include an anti-shoplifting producttag that aims to deter potential shoplifters. It was designed by fourlocal teenagers in Wolverhampton.
