Anti-Social Behaviour: Teenagers on street seen as a problem

Nearly a third of people in the UK say there is a big problem in their area with teenagers hanging around on the streets, according to a quarterly survey carried out by the Home Office.

The quarterly findings of the British Crime Survey reveal that 32 percent of people say there is a problem, up from 29 per cent from the samequarter in 2004.

But Richard Garside, acting director of the Centre for Crime and JusticeStudies, said these views "are an amplification of the anti-socialagenda being pushed by the Government".

"Hanging around on the streets is not an offence but it is seen to be aproblem," he added.

The survey also found that just over a quarter (26 per cent) of thepublic are confident that the criminal justice system is effective indealing with young people accused of crime.
