ANTI-BULLYING: Schools continue to fail young lesbians

1 min read

A survey carried out by the youth organisation found that anti-bullying policies in schools are often lacking in policies relating to sexuality.

Out of 2,043 schools approached, 137 schools responded, of which only 13 per cent had anti-bullying policies relating to sexuality.

Steph Green, director of services for young women at the YWCA, said: "The survey backed the need for more specific provision for young lesbians or bisexual girls. Most get absorbed into mixed lesbian, gay or bisexual groups of all ages, which is based around bar culture that isn't always appropriate." The YWCA is calling for zero tolerance of homophobic bullying in schools, with specific anti-bullying policies on sexuality.
