ANALYSIS: School Nurses - Expansion to counter health woes

The Government wants a permanent nurse to join the staff of every state school in a bid to improve the wellbeing of the country's pupils. Gordon Carson investigates how early intervention could change the lifestyles of the UK's schoolchildren

With concerns growing for the health of the nation's children, the Government seems to be on to a winner with its announcement last week of plans to put a school nurse in every state school.

There are currently only around 2,500 school nurses for 20,000 schools, so much time and effort will be needed in the recruitment and training process before the Government's plans become reality. The Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Health are discussing the idea, which they say is "part of the drive to help pupils be as healthy as they can so schools can be a central part of the public health agenda".
