ANALYSIS: Recruitment - Youth work needs you ..

Long-term vacancies for part-time and full-time youth workers are being reported in affluent areas such as Berkshire, Reading and Greater London (YPN, 5 February). The scale of the shortages is difficult to measure, but a quick glance at job ads shows a high number of re-advertisements, which suggests that jobs are easy to find and many are proving hard to fill.

Mark Vernon, youth services manager, West Berkshire County Council, says: "We have been having significant problems recruiting youth workers, who we consider vital to the development of our young people. But rising housing and living costs, plus a high rate of employment here, means people are not willing to jump jobs. It's a real issue."
