In the current climate of NHS budget deficits, one way of ensuring that health resources are meeting the needs of young people would be to consult them. But giving young people with mental health problems a voice in shaping related services requires sensitivity, flexibility and respect, something that they often feel is lacking in their experiences of health services.

This week, youth mental health charity YoungMinds is launching a manual to help local services and agencies develop a protocol for young people who self-harm (YPN, 7-13 June, p3). See beyond the label was developed by young people who self-harm in Hastings and Rotherham as part of an initiative to develop a local user involvement framework for self-harmers.
