Few would deny that self-confidence is a vital trait in anyone hoping to achieve success. But a belief in your own abilities rarely comes naturally and many young people lack or lose self-confidence for a wide variety of reasons.
The importance of developing young people's self-belief is such that the Scottish Executive is funding a centre in Glasgow to train youth workers in how to improve teenagers' self-confidence (YPN, 8-14 December, p6).
The centre's creation, and the executive's support, reflect a growing awareness of the importance confidence plays in getting ahead, something the youth work sector has long been aware of.
