Analysis: Participation - The boards where young people call allthe shots

Encouraging youth participation in decision-making has become increasingly common, but actually handing over the running of organisations to young people is still the exception.

Despite this, YouthBank, which gives grants to young people's projects, is holding elections next month for a trustee board made up entirely of 18- to 30-year-olds (YPN, 17-23 March, p3).

New way of thinking

The move is part of YouthBank's preparations to become an independent charity next January. It will join a select number of organisations run by and for young people, such as the British Youth Council, whose governing board is made up of 18- to 26-year-olds.
