Children's services took a central role at Labour's annual conference last week, and look certain to feature heavily in its next election manifesto, but discussions about youth services were conspicuous by their absence.
In his speech, Tony Blair outlined 10 pledges that will be central to the re-election campaign, including a promise to make life easier for families by opening "a Sure Start children's centre in every community in Britain".
Chancellor Gordon Brown told delegates: "We will not rest until millions denied opportunity can achieve their aspirations and until the three million children living in poverty are growing up in a Britain where child poverty has been eradicated for good."
