Analysis: Children's medicine - Pioneering research unit unveiled

Sheffield Children's Hospital has long been associated with medical research, but now it is to open the UK's first clinical research unit dedicated to paediatric medicine. Cathy Wallace discovers why this is such an important development.

William Staniforth is a tall, strapping 15-year-old working hard towardshis GCSEs. It is hard to believe that at six months of age his life hungin the balance.

William was born prematurely and was constantly ill during the first fewmonths of his life. One morning mum Susan was unable to wake her son andhe was rushed to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Doctors diagnosed William with a condition called L-Chad, which means heis missing the enzyme that allows his body to digest long-term fat.

Thanks to the diagnosis William has been able to lead a normal, ifslightly more difficult, life.

Susan says. "He can't have butter, chocolate, biscuits or anythingcooked in oil. I've learned to make fat-free bread and we try as afamily to make things easier for him.
