Analysis: Childcare & Early Years - Nurseries baffled by cost analysis

3 mins read Early Years
Local authorities are trying to fill gaps in funding for non-maintained nurseries, but a National Day Nurseries Association survey, seen exclusively by CYP Now, suggests this process is confusing the very organisations it aims to help. Helen Gilbert reports.

Local authority efforts to identify shortfalls in funding for the free early years entitlement are proving to be a confusing experience for nurseries.

A snapshot survey of 150 nurseries by the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) seen exclusively by CYP Now, found 36 per cent described the process as difficult to complete because of complicated and time-consuming forms and the short time-frame for the process.

The problems were such that half of the nurseries surveyed said they simply gave up and did not take part in the process. But with 70 per cent of these nurseries saying they are making a loss by providing free entitlement sessions, it is worrying that many have given up on the process that was set up specifically to help address this funding problem.
