Analysis: Child protection - Call for work with mosque schools

3 mins read
Muslim religious schools are not up to scratch on child protection measures, putting more than 100,000 children "at significant risk of harm" according to a report. Sue Learner finds out why and how some local authorities are helping to improve the situation.

More than 100,000 children are at risk of abuse at mosque schools acrossthe UK, because few follow legally required child protection measures, according to a recent report.

There are around 700 mosque schools, known as madrasas, in the UK. Theseschools, some of which have as many as 500 pupils, hold classes on Islamafter school and on weekends. However, only a small number of localauthorities insist that mosque schools abide by the child protectionmeasures detailed in the Children Act 1989 (Children Now, 29 March-4April).

This means that Muslim children are being exposed to "significant riskof harm", says Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, leader of the Muslim Parliament ofGreat Britain and author of the report Child Protection in Faith-BasedEnvironments.
