All children's workers must deal with alcohol misuse, report says

1 min read Health
All children's and youth professionals must be better skilled up to identify alcohol misuse and deliver basic interventions to improve health outcomes, according to a report by Alcohol Concern.

The report, due to be published on 23 October and seen first by CYP Now, includes the findings of six consultation seminars with children's professionals, in which they were asked about a number of alcohol-related issues that could cause harm to young people.

The report recommends that professionals regularly working with children and young people incorporate responsibility for alcohol harm reduction into their working practices. The call is in line with guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which has sought to place greater emphasis on prevention by expanding responsibility for alcohol reduction.

To help do this, Alcohol Concern is urging that professionals are "appropriately supported and skilled through access to inexpensive training, appropriate supervision, knowledge of local services and access to evidence-based youth-specific tools and resources".
