ALCOHOL: Teenagers fail to heed warning about perils of bingedrinking

The interim analytical study from the Cabinet Office's Strategy Unit also warns that young people have not been receptive to messages about sensible drinking.

It's not just the young people's drinking that is cause for concern: up to 1.3 million children in the UK are affected by parental alcohol problems. Binge drinking is linked to 22,000 premature deaths and costs the country up to 20bn each year.

Hazel Blears, Home Office minister for the project, said: "Increasing numbers of people - especially the young - are drinking well above the safe limits. This is bringing with it health risks as well as a range of social problems."
