Activities success: Newham young people go for gold

Children in the east London borough of Newham enjoyed activities including gymnastics and horse-riding as part of the council's Olympic Gold Card activities. It offered 26 of the 28 Olympic sports to young people aged six to 18. More than 64,000 visits were made to the activities and the council had to add more sessions to cope with demand. The East London Gymnastics Centre in Beckton says the summer scheme has already had a knock-on effect and reports an increase in junior membership.

Newham is a backer of the London 2012 Olympic bid. Sir Robin Wales, mayor of Newham, said the Gold Card programme had "made sports accessible to all areas of the community".
