Academies to offer youth facilities

Education Youth Work
On-site youth services are to be an integral part of three academy schools opened this week by Christian youth charity Oasis.

Pupils at the schools, two of which are in North East Lincolnshire and the other in Enfield in north London, will have access to a range of youth services run by the Christian charity. Services will include youth clubs, mentoring programmes, after-school clubs and holiday schemes.

In addition the schools will work together as part of an "interdependent family" to share expertise and good practice. As opposed to the traditionally competitive relationship between secondary schools, the academies will be "a group of schools whose best interests are served by each other's success", according to Steve Chalke, chair of Oasis Community Learning.

Adult learning opportunities will also be on offer, so the schools will work with the whole community. In the long term all Oasis academies will incorporate Healthy Living Centres, including GP surgeries and sports facilities.
