ABUSE: Children lobby MPs to outlaw hitting

Young people have joined the NSPCC to campaign for a change in the law to stop parents inflicting physical injuries on children in the name of "reasonable chastisement".

At the House of Commons last week, the group held up placards to encourage MPs to sign an early day motion on the subject. To date nearly 50 MPs have signed.

David Hinchliffe, the Labour MP for Wakefield, tabled the motion on 1 July, which, among others points, calls for "reasonable chastisement" to be scrapped by Parliament.

Eighty-three per cent of MPs think physical punishment of children can lead to physical abuse in some cases, according to a MORI poll carried out for the NSPCC. Furthermore, 45 per cent either strongly supported or tended to support legal reform on hitting children.
