Three South East councils embraced that challenge by staging a joint conference, supported by Nicola Podd, regional development manager for London and the South East at the charity 4Children.
The idea sprang from work around extended services and special schools in Kent and tied in with ongoing work in East Sussex. Other authorities were invited to join in and West Sussex jumped at the chance.
Podd organised a series of joint planning meetings ahead of the conference, which was staged in Kent in February.
The event, entitled Extending Services for Disabled Children and Young People and Those With Additional Needs, was free for delegates as places were funded by the three councils. It was aimed at strategic managers such as extended schools leads, local authority leads on special education needs (SEN) or disabled children, childcare leads, lead members, strategic directors and head teachers of special and mainstream schools.
