Hinds calls on Ofsted to reward good school SEND support

2 mins read Education
Education Secretary Damian Hinds is to ask Ofsted to do more to recognise mainstream schools that excel in supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Disability campaigners have raised concerns that schools are not investing enough money and resources in supporting SEND pupils, and that some are unofficially excluding pupils with special needs - known as "off rolling" - in an attempt to improve exam results.

Last month, the education select committee published a report highlighting how some schools were not meeting the needs of SEND pupils due to financial pressures and the introduction of tougher behaviour policies.

Hinds has now said he wants to see mainstream schools given greater incentives to improve support for SEND pupils, with a key way to achieve this being through Ofsted recognising good provision during inspections.
