A school by and for the community: Pupils name new primary

Pupils released balloons to mark the opening of New North Community School in Islington - the first new primary school in the borough for 30 years. New North - a name chosen by pupils themselves - aims to be at the heart of the community. As well as running extended services after school hours, the site will also welcome a new children's centre from September 2007 with a range of activities for under-fives and their parents. The new build has also provided an opportunity for affordable housing to be built next to the school. "Islington Council required a creative and innovative approach to the regeneration of the area - we were pleased to help them achieve an outstanding result," said Nigel Bennett, managing director of developer Community Solutions for Schools.
