11.7m to pioneer social work ways

Social Care
Social workers in Bath are to play a frontline role in children's centres and extended schools as part of a multi-million pound series of projects to test out new ways of delivering social work.

The Bath and North East Somerset scheme will enable social workers to spend more time with families where children are at risk of being placed on the child protection register.

The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) is spending £11.7m through its Remodelling Social Work Project on 18 projects to explore new ways of conducting children's social work. It announced the first nine pilots last week.

Another of the three-year pilots will see Tower Hamlets create a "social worker coach" role. The coach will support the training and development of the London borough's social workers and improve relationships with partner organisations.

CWDC chief executive, Jane Haywood, said social workers would have the chance to learn from the pilots' work through a series of conferences.
