Vox pop - Is a law needed to clarify a child's right to sue a council?

1 min read Youth Justice
Former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith's think-tank, the Centre for Social Justice, has proposed a new law to clarify the right of children in care to sue local authorities that fail to give them a decent upbringing.

YES - Ian Johnston, chief executive, British Association of Social Workers

We don't want local authorities to become more risk averse. However, social workers are now independently regulated professionals, with qualifying training at degree level and protection of title. Acting in good faith is no longer good enough.

Looked-after children's rights must be respected and decisions about their care soundly based, taking account of their own views. Where care falls below acceptable standards the children concerned should be entitled to seek redress and the process to secure compensation must be accessible and user friendly.

YES - Ryan Robson, chairman of the children in care working group, Centre for Social Justice
