Transforming talent in local government

I read a report called Transforming Talent in Local Governmenton the same day that national fertility figures fell to their lowest level on record. Based on responses from 57 local authorities, this report by Comensura explores challenges in ensuring local government has enough talented and skilled staff over the medium to long term.

The report is sobering – 83% of respondents said talent shortages across a range of disciplines have a medium/high impact on performance. Shortages across the children’s sector have been reported for years – less so the shortages in areas such as finance, legal and procurement. Yet all have a direct impact on people working in frontline children’s services and, in turn, on children, families and communities.

There is no single solution to the complex recruitment, retention and affordability challenges. They cut across the private, public and charitable sectors, each vying for staff in a shrinking pool. If leaders think talent management is something that is just for HR, then they are very much missing the point.
