The cost of childcare in the UK is higher for parents than in most OECD countries. Parents in the UK spend a third of their net household income on childcare, compared to an OECD average of 13 per cent.
The situation has been worsened by the government’s decision to reduce the amount of support available to families last year through the childcare element of working tax credit, from 80 to 70 per cent of eligible costs.
The majority of daycare providers in the UK are individual nurseries or childminders. Chains of daycare providers provide only a fraction of the overall childcare places, but they are the most competitive and sustainable.
