Six reasons to support, not condemn, young people

The number of young people killed this year has already surpassed the total for the whole of 2022. When lives are taken in such a way, it becomes easy to vilify or hang the blame somewhere in the search of answers.

In my 17 years working in the field I have seen entire communities grapple with this sobering reality that affords no easy answers. While we want justice, we cannot afford to lose faith in our young people or cast blame on their families. We must recognise the underlying factors contributing to this issue and work towards rehabilitation and support. Here are six reasons why.

1. They are tomorrow’s leaders

Every young person I have worked with is bright, entrepreneurial and they have direction in that they know what they want, they merely lack the means. What’s more, they know their own problems and often know their own solutions. If we provide them with the right guidance and opportunities, we can help them become agents of positive change.
