Place children at the centre of policymaking and we'll create a better and fairer society

Two incidents stood out for me on a recent visit to Spain. The first involved a child, aged about three or four, falling off his bike. Almost before he hit the ground, half a dozen adults had come to his assistance.

By the time his mum had caught up with him, he had been stood up, dusted down and put back on his wheels. His mum thanked the passers-by, both men and women, who had helped and, although my Spanish is limited, they all seemed to agree that "kids would be kids". The second concerned a group of teenagers, walking arm in arm up the main street. They were very loud and lairy. One threw a drink can towards a bin and missed. He picked it up and managed to get it in on his second attempt. A passing adult congratulated him on a "good shot".
