The National Citizenship Service's Five- Year Impact Report shows that in 2022, uptake of its residential offer surpassed pre-pandemic levels with experts hailing social and educational development, reducing loneliness through increased connection with peers and building bonds with trusted adults as some of the benefits of such stays.
In the 12 months after the last Covid-19 lockdown, Childline counsellors delivered 5,564 counselling sessions to young people struggling with loneliness.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport's pledge is backed by a share of the £560m Youth Investment Fund but comes following more than a decade of cuts totalling more than £1bn.
Earlier this year, Girlguiding UK revealed plans to sell five of its activity centres on the grounds that the £20m it will cost to refurbish them is unsustainable, while Cornwall-based outdoor learning provider BF Adventure has begun to offer public camping onsite to improve the setting's financial sustainability (see Analysis).
