The Prime Minister made an impressive speech outlining the rationale for the programme: cohesion, responsibility and engagement. As a flagship component of his big society vision, he wants 10,000 young people to be part of a pilot next summer.
Without going into detail, I sometimes think that the ideas around NCS do not go far enough. But what was interesting at the launch was the presence of virtually every self-respecting youth organisation in the country.
Whether this actually means that they support the vision and application of NCS or not, I do not know. But I suspect they will be foolish, as hard times arrive, not to pay at least lip service to the idea.
