Just don't mention the Olympics

It came as news to me that as soon as the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Games is over and done with, we will commence our "Cultural Olympiad".

According to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, this four-year celebration of culture, people and language that will take place during the build up to the 2012 games will provide an "unforgettable experience and lasting change".

Thousands of people from the cultural and creative sector have apparently been busy working away behind the scenes on the shape, purpose and ambition of the festival. And a whole range of major events are now planned, including film, video and music projects, as well as a very ambitious plan to stage a world festival of youth culture.

We're also being promised that the programme will include thousands of local and regional community events, exhibitions and projects as part of this nationwide celebration.
