The shadow children's minister said that the quality of local authority youth services left a "lot to be desired" and that he would like to see more services run by the third sector.
Many in the voluntary sector have long argued that they provide more innovative projects and deserve a bigger share of the funding. I visited one voluntary sector youth project in London several years ago where the worker was livid to discover that a local authority club down the road had received funding from the council again. His project, he said, attracted three times as many young people, yet he had to spend his days writing funding bids just so it could stay open.
