From the Frontline - Reflecting on over 35 years of youthwork

1 min read Youth Work
I've just compiled a newsletter for voluntary youth organisations in Warwickshire focusing on the Government's 10-year strategy for positive activities. I'm due to retire in December after 35 years of involvement in youth work, so I smugly reflected on this latest in a long line of government missives and breathed a sigh of relief that it wouldn't affect me.

But then I realised that once you're a youth worker, you're always a youth worker and it's down to us "oldies" to ensure that young people continue to get a better deal, even if I'll have to do this in a more subtle way in future.

I've not gone quite yet. I have a series of final meetings throughout the autumn and I feel sure there will be some reaction voiced about the direction youth policy is taking.

One voluntary sector officer has already told me that he awaits the small print before passing judgment. I expect cries of "proof of the pudding" and "heard it all before" will be balanced by those who are always positive, who live in hope and who look forward to something better for their young people.
