A wise government would invest

1 min read Youth Work Editorial
Labour has spent more than 900m on young people's services during its time in power.

Just under a third of this money has gone towards the Myplace fund to create 70 state-of-the-art youth centres and a further £120m has been invested in the youth capital fund to create and refurbish places for young people to go. Such levels of funding sound staggering but actually pale into insignificance when compared with the £9.3bn allocated to the Building Schools for the Future programme for the period 2008 to 2011.

For all the talk of substantial investment, young people's services have remained the Cinderella service in too many parts of the country. According to the union Unite, youth services on average only spend £100 per teenager in their area when in fact it would cost £350 per young person to ensure they received a full range of services.
