Children arriving in the UK under both the Ukraine Family scheme and Homes for Ukraine scheme “have the right to access education and childcare whilst in the UK,” Zahawi says in his letter which has been published by the Department for Education.

“Our expectation is that if there are school places available in the local area, even if not in the immediate vicinity of the family’s home, the local authority will work with families arriving from Ukraine to enable the children to attend school as soon as possible,” it adds.

Councils may exceed the number of children in infant classes “where necessary” to admit Ukrainian children to local schools, according to Zahawi, who adds that this can be done using government-approved “flexibilities to admit above published admission number”.
