Youth workers must be more vocal, says ‘undercover' boss

Youth workers need to be more vocal about their impact and the financial challenges they face in order to gain public support, a senior director of YMCA England has said.

Bims Alalade, the charity’s director of HR, has said the public is willing to support the sector but does not understand the full extent of the challenges youth workers face.

Her comments came after she spent two weeks pretending to be a youth worker as part of Channel 4’s Undercover Boss series.

Alalade said the YMCAs featured in the show, as well as YMCA England, have been inundated with offers of support – from installing shelving to fundraising – since the programme aired in August. She believes this proves that youth workers, and charities, need to be more open about the financial challenges they face.
