Youth work roundup: Boat station, EU referendum and self-worth

A new Sea Cadet boat station opens in north London; SNP MP Mhairi Black calls on young people to ensure they are registered to vote in the EU referendum; and a charity warns a lack of self-worth is driving increasing number of young people to consider taking their own life, all in the news this week.

A new Sea Cadet boat station has been officially opened in North London by world champion sailor Megan Pascoe. The formal opening ceremony of the Welsh Harp Boat Station in Wembley took place on 14 May. A total of £750,000 was raised by the Sea Cadets to replace the former boat station that was built in 1960.


?SNP MP Mhairi Black has called on young people to ensure they are registered to vote in the upcoming referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union as they “could hold the balance” on whether the UK remains or leaves. Glasgow Live reports the 21-year-old MP believes her generation will be most affected by the outcome of the vote on 23 June.?


??A lack of self-worth is driving increasing numbers of young people to consider taking their own life, a charity has warned. The Liverpool Echo reports that Papyrus said young people should be taught that good relationships stem from looking after themselves. It has called for more general mental wellbeing in schools and awareness in society in general.?

??A national dance body has brought together a group of youth dance experts in a bid to boost its work with children and young people. The Stage reports that One Dance UK said the move marked a “significant development” in its provision of opportunities for young people and support for those working with children. ?


Financial pressures on young people in Britain has eased slightly since the financial crisis, according to the Office for National Statistics. The Guardian reports the proportion of 16-to 24-year-olds findings it difficult or very difficult to get by fell to eight per cent in 2013/14 from 15 per cent in 2009/10.?
