Youth police ambassador warns of online dangers

One of the country's first youth police ambassadors has warned young people to take more care online in light of growing concerns over cyberbullying and offensive social media messages.

Dominic Rogers, 23, who was appointed to the £23,000-a-year youth ambassador post in Cheshire by the county's police and crime commissioner John Dwyer, told CYP Now that raising awareness on internet safety is an immediate priority.

“Young people need to be aware of the dangers out there,” said Rogers, who is contracted until February 2016.

“The internet allows such freedom for young people that it is important they realise the dangers.”

His comments come as police in Fife investigate claims that a 17-year-boy killed himself because he was being blackmailed on the internet.

It is thought Daniel Perry had become involved in a scam where victims are befriended and tricked into making explicit webcam recordings before being blackmailed.
