The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, which will change the requirements needed for a person to obtain a gender recognition certificate in Scotland – legally recognising their affirmed gender – has been blocked by the UK government from coming into law, in an unprecedented section 35 challenge.

The UK government’s decision to block the bill from becoming law has come under fire from young people and youth organisations across Scotland and the devolved nations, with the move condemned as harmful to transgender young people and a setback to trans rights.

The British Youth Council (BYC), which represents millions of young people, urged the government to reverse its decision, citing concern that the issue will increase stress and anxiety for transgender young people.
