Minimum requirements for youth offending teams (YOTs) are to be relaxed under a pilot project being run by the Youth Justice Board (YJB).

However, on the back of the Localism Bill and Justice Green Paper, the YJB has revealed it is keen to work with YOTs to allow them to be more flexible in what they adhere to.

This includes "increasing professional discretion in relation to some youth justice national standards".

"We are keen to work with a small number of pilot YOTs over the next six to 12 months to test out such an approach for youth justice," the YJB said. "The work of pilot YOTs will help to shape and inform our approach to professional discretion and national standards.

"We will shortly be initiating a project for this work, and will communicate the next steps to YOTs over the next two months, including information on how to get involved in the pilot process."
