
The coalition, which is led by the Youth Media Agency and brings together 105 youth groups, made its call in a submission to the committee responsible for the Editors' Code of Practice, which informs the decisions of the Press Complaints Commission.
The submission urges the committee to add age to the list of grounds on which newspapers and magazines may discriminate against those they write about.
Susana Giner, director of the Youth Media Agency, said adding age discrimination to the code would curb reporting that demonises young people.
“It would mean that young people would have a form of redress, since right now you can’t report a paper to the Press Complaints Commission for being ageist because that is not part of the code,” she said.
