
George Osborne’s autumn statement to the House of Commons yesterday contained only one reference to youth unemployment, in which the Chancellor argued that the number of young people out of work is falling.
But youth charity Rathbone claimed that wider measures announced in the statement will provide opportunities over and above the government’s £1bn Youth Contract, designed to help young people into work.
The statement included the announcement of an additional £1bn to build roads, a £1bn loan to extend London Underground’s Northern Line to Battersea and £1bn to improve good schools and build 100 new free schools and academies, as well as funding to construct up to 120,000 homes.
